About This Campus
In the summer of 2006, Healing Place Church was given the use of a warehouse and office facility at 450 Roselawn Avenue - a street that is located in a high crime area of town. Around that same time, a few key leaders from Joyce Meyer’s Dream Center in St. Louis MO, returned to the Baton Rouge area and were asked by Pastor Johnny Green to start doing food giveaways and door-to-door street outreaches from the new facility. By the fall, a ladies Bible study had been started as well as a preschool program. Also, a few community service federal grants started to be facilitated out of this building. They named that facility, “The Baton Rouge Dream Center.”
The Dream Center operated out of this facility from September 2006 until September 2007. At that time, HPC was approached by Winbourne Baptist Church and was asked if it would like to take over their 60,000 square foot facility at 4829 Winbourne Avenue - a space 10 times larger than the facility on Roselawn Avenue. After moving into the new facility, BRDC housed programs such as help for ex-offenders, abstinence for teens, job readiness, classes for children aging out of foster care, anti-human trafficking, GED classes, the victims of violent crime initiative, a drop-in center, and a street outreach for homeless youth. Also, door-to-door outreaches to the community were expanded to several times a week. At this time, mission teams started coming in from around the country to stay onsite and do ministry at the Dream Center. The new facility also provided the opportunity for monthly block parties and a free clothing boutique to start. Also, a free Cafe opened to the community.
Since 2006, a bond has formed between the community and the Dream Center. By the spring of 2008, Sunday services were started at the Dream Center. In April of 2010, the small Baptist congregation turned over the facility completely to Healing Place Church. In the summer of 2010, several people from the community graduated from a leadership class and 13 interns participated in the intern program at the Dream Center.
The Dream Center is located in one of the highest juvenile crime areas in Louisiana. In 2006, the 70805 zip code had the highest murder rate in our area, and Baton Rouge was number three in the nation of new AIDS cases reported. 70% of males in this area will not graduate from high school. Louisiana has one of the highest homeless youth populations in the country.
The Baton Rouge Dream Center is in the right place at the right time. Through the power of God, we aim to see a complete turnaround in the 70805 area!
